What is this program?
The Low Income Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) enables low-income families to reduce their energy costs through greater energy efficiency in their homes. The funds are used to improve the energy performance of the homes of families in need, using the most advanced technology and testing the procedures available in the housing industry. The US Department of Energy (DOE) provides funds to states, overseas US territories, and tribal Indian governments, who are responsible for administering the program. Who is eligible for this program?
To be eligible for this benefit program, applicants must be residents of the state where they apply and need financial assistance to cover their home energy costs. Preference may be given to:
- People over 60 years
- Families with one or more members who have a disability
- Families with children (in most states).
If you receive Supplemental Security Income or Assistance to Families with Dependent Children, you automatically qualify for weatherization services.
